| Introduction | I live below Blackstone Edge, just north of Rochdale. I’ve always lived on the edge of towns. It’s what you do when you have enough money to avoid the worst places, but can’t afford the best. The valley is a mix of the beautiful and the ugly; it goes back to the Mesolithic, but has a particularly rich industrial legacy – first the packhorse routes, then the toll roads, the canal, and lastly, the railway. It was home to both the wool and cotton industries and once held over sixty mills. All this is crammed into a narrow, steep-sided valley which also hosts a surprising variety of wildlife. It's beautiful, and I love it. |
