IntroductionI was born and raised in the island of Bellona, a Polynesian island of the Solomons that has a population of less than 3,000. The island is known to our indigenous people as Mungiki, located South of Guadalcanal and North East of Queensland, Australia. The people of Mungiki and her sister island of Mugava (Rennell), are an ethnic minority group in the Solomons. I began my career as a journalist with the first locally owned English newspaper, The Solomon Toktok, in 1990, and later joined The Solomon Star in 1993 to 1995. Against all odds in a country where our people are racially marginalised, I worked my way up the ladder of opportunity to become the first indigenous Solomon Islander and Pacific Islander to graduate with a ‘Master of Arts (MA) degree in Journalism in one of Australasia most prestigious journalism schools at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in 2003. I left Solomon Islands in early 2001, following death threats by ethnic Malaita Eagle Force (MEF) armed militia leadership, due to my media coverage of the ethnic conflict during and after the June 2000 coup. I’m now residing in Australia, working as a journalist. More in my research profile.
