Introduction I started the first version of Affordable Solar in 1998 after a 2 year stint with Zomeworks and a year of solar consulting. The first office was in a dilapidated 1964 Airstream with a phone line going back to the house through the bedroom window. I was great at selling because I loved the technology but I sucked at marketing so it was a hand to mouth existence. Back in the day the only market was off grid and it was a tiny one except for a small blip in the buildup to Y2K. The market really took off in 2002 with the first grid tie incentive programs in California. In 1998 we sold about 300 watts a week or 15kW a year. By the end of 2004 we were supplying about 20kW a week or 1MW per year. Today we have about 50 employees and supply about 210kW per week or about 10MW's a year so my mother has stopped worrying. Other than my kids, my other claim to fame is having co-authored the 2nd and 3rd editions of The Complete Idiots Guide to Solar Power for Your Home.
