Industry Education
Occupation Director of Religious Education, part time
Location Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Introduction I became a DRE in 2002 when a job suddenly opened up as an Interim position at the Ottawa First Unitarian Congregation. It was initially to be a two year position, but got extended to three, which meant it was impossible to continue as a "visiting interim" -- but I didn't learn that until I took the then new-for-DREs interim training offered at the UUA General Assembly in June 2005. I resigned in spring 2005 and was unemployed for a year, then moved to Columbus , Ohio for almost two years as a trained Intereim -- although I loved the work, I missed Canada and my family, plus wanted to stay somewhere long enough to really build deep relationships, so was happy to accept my current role as part time DRE at the Unitarian Church of Montreal. When I retire in June 2015, I will have served this congregation for seven years, and I will turn 70, so I am working on being ready to make that change -- with myself and also within the whole congregation, which had not had the experience of a long term DRE for several previous terms! It will be hard to say goodbye, but I do think the time will be right, and I am greatly looking forward to see who is hired next!
