| Introduction | I've been much interested in French writers and history in the 18th and 19th centuries, but I had no opportunity to learn the fascinating tongue since my birth in a non-French-speaking country. Of late I've begun to learn the language for myself, from grammar books and dictionaries, for I would soon be too old to learn a new language if I didn't begin to now.
