| Favorite music | I "grew up" in the 70's and still adore the late Beatles, Stones, Yes, King Crimson, Bowie, Eno, and listen to a lot of Funk and early Reggae. Came of age with The Talking Heads and The Police. Since then I have gone inward and outward, World (mostly Africa) and Delta Blues (from roots to Chicago). A few favorites: Fela Kuti, Orchestra Baobab, Thomas Mapfuno, Ali Farka Toure, Angelique Kidjo, Cheikh Lo, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howling Wolf, Marley and Tosh, Toots Hibbert, King Tubby, Lee Scratch Perry. |
| Favorite books | I am a knowledge junky and read almost exclusively non-fiction these days: memoir, psychology, ethnography, history, science. My choices are largely guided by chance and intuition (the next right book). Early influences where Verne, Stevenson, Swift, Defoe, Carroll, Twain. Later all the Russians in Russian (favorites: Lermontov, Gogol, Turgenyev, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Babel, Bulgakov.) In high school Hardy, Conrad, Huxley, Orwell, Hesse, Camus, O'Neill, Wright, Golding, Vonnegut, Burgess; in college Joyce, Kafka, Calvino. Recent favorites: William Kennedy, Charles Johnson, Dennis Johnson. |
