| Introduction | I was inspired, while still a student, to write down and record special moments that reminded me of the frailty of humanity. For I had immediately observed how so many heathcare workers were calloused and cold toward their patients. I was given the impression they had become this way over the years, for how could they want to help patients and yet be so heartless...so I vowed to never become like such. I didn't write, and regret the fact. Recently, while working in a level 1 trauma hospital and seeing far, far worse than ever before, I found myself becoming 'colder'...a coping method possibly, but I still felt guilty for having moments of insensitivites. So, the writing begins. I hope in someway others will benefit from this, either as a reminder to take time to be of service to others, or as a way to find gratitude for their health, their families, their homes, their sanity, the very fact they still have the breath of life, etc., for in comparison to many of my patients, we all have so very much to be grateful for. May these writings grant us the ability to have a bit more grace and compassion, to show empathy when we can; to leave a heart print on those who cross your path. |
