| Introduction | Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to read the rationale for why adopted persons should be provided unfettered access to their complete, original birth records. Presently those adopted in New York have their true identities and birth certificates withheld by the state for the entirety of their lives. This circumstance is unfair, cruel, and contrary to the best interest of the child who was adopted - and on whose behalf everyone is supposed to be acting. Speaking as one adopted at birth, I know that oftentimes adoptees agonize over not knowing their origins, feel the sting of discrimination in being denied access to their own personal records, and are frequently psychologically harmed by present practices. I lobby for change in New York State Family Law and the Public Health Law in the hopes that those touched by adoption may pursue life on their own terms. Please share what you learn here with others, and thank you for your support of adoptee rights. |
