| Introduction | EcoEtique was born from the idea that social etiquette and environmental etiquette come from the same vein of thought. In general, the manner in which we as individuals might present ourselves in our various social dynamics – whether it is school, family, work or relationships – corresponds on many levels to the manner in how we treat the planet. I like to refer to what we allow and how we govern in our 'mini' environments. In more familiar terms, it can be explained when someone decides to throw a party. Do they use something local from the farmers market over an exotic option that's tracked thousands of food miles? Are they putting out plates made from Styrofoam or PVC plastic (an unrecyclable plastic) or using dishes or bamboo plates? Are all the lights on? Or have they used some ambient candles and energy efficient CFLs? Many factors help constitute the way our lives are built; etiquette is just a part of it. I want to show how social etiquette and environmental etiquette, when viewed in combination and/or related, can lend itself to learning more how we interact with ourselves and the planet, and how we can treat both better. |
