IntroductionAs a vinyl lover, I purchased my first new turntable around 1975 - a pioneer PL12D with an Armstrong 621 amplifier. But the hi-fi bug had me and I traded the PL12D in against a New Improved SME. The hi-fi shop was on the corner of my street (gone are those days) and I remember plucking the new boxed SME off a pile of them on the shelf and quickly left the shop in case they changed their mind. The magazines told me which deck I needed, it was Connoisseur BD1 Kit. I ran that part DIY deck till about 2006 when I ventured into high-end suspended decks which I liked but not enough to continue with. I found myself drawn back to the sound I enjoyed from my earlier system with the Connoisseur BD1 at its heart and no springs. This is where I am now, involved in repair and restoration of Connoisseur turntables and designing plinths for them. The feeling is it’s good to be back. You can’t be involved with these turntables though without needing to source or make rubber parts, which was the start of Williams-Sonics. William Rhodes MSc
