| Introduction | I'm a dedicated Special Parent in Training to my 12yr old daughter. I have been fortunate to enjoy sole custody since she was a baby. We learned to walk through great effort and many long hours of practice. I trained as an Early Sign Language Instructor and was able to give her a voice many years before she could speak. Early intervention and diagnosis played a key role in preparing me to face the tasks necessary in learning to care for the specific needs of a child with teratogenic organic brain damage. I immersed myself in the shallow pool of knowledge regarding viable "treatments" for neurodevelopmental disabilities and arose on the opposite bank barely whetted. As so many medical experts in the field of pediatric special needs have observed, "...there is little to indicate which specific treatments are most efficacious, but that the application of any determined and sustained effort towards the affirmation of essential life skills will lead to a more positive long-term outcome for the individual…" Thus, I continue to seek the environment that will best accommodate my daughter’s perceptual and sensory functional abilities. |
