| Introduction | My family is from the Canton (now Guangdong) province of China and arrived in Miami via Cuba in the 1960's. I'm from a restaurant family so all things about food and cooking are HIGH on my list. Yes, I'm a foodie -- there, I've confessed! Although, the family business back in Havana was a "bodega," one of my father's great loves was cooking so he apprenticed in the kitchens of Havana and became a chef. His first business upon arriving in downtown Miami was an ice cream shop. He used all fresh ingredients with a tropical twist. My family still recalls my dreamy murmurs of various ice cream flavors ... mamey, mango, coco! To this day, I'm an ice cream gourmand! We were blessed to enjoy the fruits of my father's love for cooking. Indeed, our tummies were wonderfully full and loved! Although, Cantonese home cooking is what I grew up on, my heart belongs to Cuban food! My family always chuckled at my girlish passion for all things Cuban. When given a choice, I always asked for Cuban. Now, my kids have inherited a love for Cuban food. There's nothing like a bowl of rice with black bean soup! Pass the chopsticks, please! |
