| Introduction | I am an Assistant Professor of English at Furman University. |
| Interests | My research interests focus on the role of irony and satire in the emergence of liberal culture and politics, from the novel to early economics: rather than simply neutrally representing the world, I argue that these forms sought to change the very coordinates that defined it. Much as an ironic satirist will feign a certain neutrality, writers like Defoe and Smith used their detached depictions to subtly combat various cynical views of human nature. This blog attempts to read back into contemporary politics and economics something of this history, and it accompanies the writing course I teach on the same subject. |
