| Introduction | We are Wallace (Wally) and Carolyn Sternberg. We have been sweethearts since high school. In 2002, we retired, sold our brick home the next morning after talking with our realtor! We wanted to travel and everything fell into place to make that happen. It was meant to be. We had not planned to work while on the road...it just happened. Our first trip was up the west coast where we stayed in Oregon for awhile. That is where we discovered workkamping. They wanted us now (August). Hey, that was wonderful...3 days a week, you get to stay free, AND some places even pay a stipend. WOW. We were both born and raised in the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas. We were invited to move out to Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge by another volunteer, Paul, who paved the way for us. We fell in love with refuges and their mission, and have been volunteering at various refuges ever since. This journal is written by me, Carolyn, mainly for our memories.
