| Introduction | I have practiced yoga since 1999. My initial practice consisted of twice-a-day, soft hatha practice and meditation. I practiced under the guidance of Ananda Marga teachers. The person who really turned me on to yoga was an impossibly tall, soft spoken yogic monk called Dada Acal, originally Australian. He was a tall, turban-wearing man, wise and very down to earth. Although I didn't stick to Ananda Marga for very long, it was Dada Acal who lit a spark in me that led to yoga becoming a major part of my lifestyle. I started understanding why vegetarianism was (and still is) the only acceptable option for me and how yoga was much more than nifty physical exercise. Ananda Marga´s hatha sequences didn´t quite agree with my body though. I have always been relatively flexible, but my flexibility was unbalanced. Flexible here, tight there, fine here, pain there. Sometime you feel it is time to move on. Still, that was where and how the yogi in me got ignited and I still have very fond memories of that time. I tried my first Ashtanga class, to try something else. It was sweaty, intense, incredible... I was in love. I still am. |
