IntroductionGilbert Findlay was born at a very early age, in England, but he only did it to be near his mother. (I've waited all my life to begin like that.) He majored in math, etc., at Pomona College, etc., but after banking, market analysis in recorded music, a US army tour in London, etc.; he read for a PhD in English at the University of Washington. At Colorado State University, he taught 31 different courses including autobiography, comedy, poetry, adolescents' literature, etc., including "Baby Shakespeare," a university core curriculum course he designed for non-English majors (peace "dead European white male" objectors; "Shakespeare," as we know, was really written by Queen Elizabeth), as well as upper-division Shakespeare and graduate seminars in Dramatic Comedy. Throughout his life he has seen roughly 84 stage productions of Shakespeare--Gielgud as Lear and Benedick, Burton as Henry V, Olivier and Vivian Leigh in Titus, Scofield as Hamlet, Peggy Ashcroft as Viola. He has always told his students he would play Rosaline in R&J (boys play girls parts and no lines to learn), but he would really choose Puck (he once beat out Richard Chamberlain for the part) or Henry V ... or Antony.
