About me

Location Philadelphia, PA, United States
Introduction Emma was born on August 7, 2009 with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). HLHS is a condition where basically the left side of the heart does not develop. More or less Emma only has half of a heart! Emma had her first open heart surgery at 5 days old (The Norwood Procedure). On October 6, 2009 Emma went into cardiac arrest and found to have coarctation of the aorta (severe narrowing). She spent the next 3 months in the ICU with many ups and downs while awaiting her next open heart surgery (The Glen). After her Glen procedure Emma continued to have difficulties and unable to come off of a medication called Milrinone due to multiple collateral veins in her heart. Emma was finally discharged to home after 7 months. After 3 weeks at home signs of heart failure became evident and she had continuous vomiting and weight loss. It became clear that Emma's condition was deteriorating and the doctors were running out of options on how to help her. Emma currently is in critical condition and in full blown heart failure. On 4/23/2010 Emma was officially placed on the heart transplant list.
