| Introduction | I am an American living in Okinawa, Japan. Okinawa is a sub-tropic region with abundant rain fall. Winter temperatures rarely dip below 55 degrees Fahrenheit (12 Celsius) and summer temperatures rarely exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius), which makes it a gardener’s paradise; however, Japan has limited space and large gardens are rare; therefore, many people have balcony gardens. I have a very small plot of land in the back of my house that is on a slope, so I primarily grow tress there and grow most of my vegetables and herbs in planters. There are some real advantages to growing in planters. I find that there are fewer pests and weeds to deal with, I do not need any large equipment, like tillers, plus I get to sit and relax in a semi-clean, dry and cool environment when planting and harvesting, not to mention being surrounded by your garden. However, balcony gardening has space limitations, so now I'm starting to go vertical. See my Strawberry tower. |
