Introduction I was born in Havana Cuba and lived though the great depression. In 1947, at the age of 19, I was sponsored by my journalist uncle Sergio Carbo and his friend Ernest Hemingway to move to New York and study art and become a professional cartoonist. During that same period I studied creative writing at New York University for one year. My wife Loretta and I have 8 children (plus I have a daughter from a previous marriage) and 11 grand children... so far. I drew comic books for DC comics, wrote articles for Dance Magazine, Famous Artists Magazine, Spandauer Volksblatt (in German translation) and other publishers. in 1969 I joined the LDS Church and now am a high priest and teach gospel classes. This gave a spiritual structure to my hitherto restless life (I'd lived for years in Europe, the Greek Islands, the Middle East, Mexico and North Africa). The Gospel at last lent me a solid eternal perspective I am now mostly retired and living in Utah, writing novels, goofy letters to my grandchildren, and illustrating one or two books a year. Life is a wonder, and it gets better every year, in spite of aging and frail health. Viva la vida! Long live life!
