IntroductionMy challenge--eat only ice cream for 1 month. Why Ice Cream? It’s something I can probably stand to eat for a month. Why at all? From about 12 years old I was a diet junkie—counting calories in each bite of food. I realized it wasn't a healthy way to live. I began noticing how diet focused people were. You could hardly eat a meal without someone getting the diet guilts. Holidays, vacations, church socials--the guilty diet mantra was everywhere. I began mulling over a diet that would prove a point. Let's face it; most people diet for vanity not health. Fear of losing our youthful bods abounds in our narcissist culture. So I challenged a dieting colleague about eating anything, even ice cream, and losing weight. Their response, "You'd get fat!" That was all the impetus I needed. I said I'd eat just ice cream for a month and we agreed to $1 per pound--I pay if I gain. Please note: I'm not advocating this diet. I don't know if I'll lose weight. The Ice Cream Diet is not about weight loss. It’s about freedom from a sick cultural obsession; it's a challenge and an experiment. I'm not against healthy eating and maintaining a healthy weight, but I wish a healthy attitude went with it.
