About me

Introduction “Dance has a serious side for me. Dance connects me to my African diaspora music and stories, the present moment, my body, my partner, my community, my sense of curiosity, and a feeling of pure joy. It gives me a reason to live.” |Biography| Deirdre has always loved dancing. Growing up in Ireland, she enjoyed the popular culture of raves and traditional Irish sets. After migrating to Australia, Deirdre connected to her Afro-American diaspora culture through dancehall reggae, hip hop and African dance. From 2011 a new love arrived in her life: partner dancing – across several styles, including Contact Improv, Brazilian Forro, Swing and Blues. A passionate member of Sydney’s vintage social dance scene since 2011, Deirdre has also trained with international blues and swing pros all over the world. In 2017-18 Deirdre dedicated a year to learning and practise of African diaspora dances – mainly blues, lindy hop and jazz. With this blog, Deirdre shares the richness of African diaspora culture with as many people as possible.
