| Introduction | The idea of a community public art project started at the time of the library building renovation in 2003-2004. The Library board set aside Renovation Funds for public art. In 2008, library board discussions resumed regarding a public art piece, with an emphasis on community participation. In 2009, Ruthanne teamed up with three-dimensional designer Shirwil Lukes to begin the design work. As the specifics came together, members of the Library Board and Staff worked together on grant applications, fundraising and community support to help plan and fund the project. Foundation grants, local businesses, and individuals made the funding of this spectacular art project possible. In 2010, the unique art of paper folding came alive when acclaimed origami artist Ruthanne Bessman offered a series of free origami workshops at the Middleton Public Library, referred to Join The Fold. Many hands from all age groups (families, friends, classroom students, preschoolers, and seniors) created one mural and learned the traditional Japanese art of folding paper. “Dimensions” is the title for the final product. It is on permanent display on the Main Level of the Library. |
