IntroductionEnglish girl in Syria is about my experiences living in Syria over the past few years, before and during the war. Having returned during the midst of war due to the death of my beloved friend, I sold all of my gold jewellery because I was broke, got a visa from the embassy in London, told my parents, family and friends I was going to France and flew to Damascus instead.I went in the name of love and was guided by a longing to understand what it was that had killed my friend. I needed to know. I wanted to comfort his brother whom I was in love with. I needed to follow a spiritual journey that involved my heart because it was a place I hadn't listened to in a long time. I don't care about politics. I care about the people. I care about ensuring that we don't lose a generation of young people in Syria due to a lack of academic opportunity in a country ravaged by civil war.We should be concerned with maintaining the education of these young people. I returned to London to work in May 2012. I would never have dared to blog in Damascus because I was always being monitored. No. The secret police aren't a figment of the imagination! :)
