Introduction | I am an artist, an art therapist and a mother who is continually trying to make sense of life. How do I do this? I collect scraps of fabric in shades like indigo, henna and nutmeg, I look for foil wrappers and bits of handmade paper and put them together in collages that make odd but beautiful sense. Trained as a fine artist, I became an art therapist while raising my kids. Once, on a flight from Iowa to California, I sat next to a man whose son had just died. He showed me photos of the boy, a small body with a big straw hat. This man told me that an art therapist had come to visit his other children. My response was immediate. "This is what I'm going to do." Since then I've worked with sisters and brothers, aunts, cousins and grandparents who have experienced a loss. When I enter my studio, I tap into this fact; that one moment a loved one is here and an instant later, they're gone. Each loss I work with becomes my subject matter, the mystery I try to make sense of and share with you in this blog as I sit here at my cloth, paper and paint covered table. |
