Introduction | Have you always been happiest when you are digging in the dirt, helping things to grow? If so, then you, too, might be a GARDEN HO(e)! I started planting stuff when I was a preschooler. My mom found me putting plush Peeps from my Easter Basket in a hole I had dug in the nearly frozen muddy earth of our Michigan yard the year I was 4. I "wanted to grow more" I told her. When I was in grammar school I pulled my Radio Flyer wagon around the neighborhood, selling bunches of my home grown parsley and sunflower seedlings. Before settling on my four acres in Maine, I lived (and gardened) in Davenport WA; Glenn Dale, MD; Glendale and Encino, CA; Austin, TX; Lake Lure and Beaufort, NC and with my grandfather in Missouri Valley, IA. Grandpa Walls was my first teacher and I learned to grow the old way, without chemicals, long before "organic" became a buzzword. I still grow that way, and have the same "market garden" philosophy as Grandpa -- grow for your family and share with the neighbors. |
