| Introduction | Raised as a Navy brat and spending my first two decades traversing the eastern seaboard of the United States, I eventually embraced my New England regional identity and settled into a life of research and writing about the rest of the world. My research tracing early American voyages to the East Indies and exploring how representations of that experience in the public sphere contributed to the construction of an American national identity, appears in True Yankees: The South Seas and the Discovery of American Identity, 1784-1844 (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2014; paperback, 2017). I am currently at work on Yankees Abroad: Early American Encounters in the World (Cambridge, MA: Hackett, forthcoming) and Eastward of Good Hope: Early America in a Dangerous World (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, in process). |
