Introduction Iris gardening in central California is wonderful and tricky. Our soil is like concrete in the summer, and pudding in the winter. We have the added fun and excitement of ground squirrels and enormous gophers. Our summers are hot, over 113°F on many days, and our winters have overnight lows in the low 20s, sometimes high teens. The challenge is in creating beds that can't be swamped, baked, or otherwise invaded by tunneling critters. The project we started this year experiments with several kinds of above ground beds, and watering systems. It's a fun project, and the trial and error process is a hoot! The reward is all the gorgeous iris blooms we'll see in the Spring.
