Introduction Raised on an Idaho cattle ranch, self-sufficiency was a way of life for my family. When the wind blew, the power went out. Out came the water jugs, stored below all of Grandma's jars of veggies and fruit she put up each summer from the garden. Grandpa was out in the fields, so Grandma did most of the repair work herself and sewed and repaired many of our clothes. I learned from her to ask people to teach me what I wanted to learn. Self-sufficiency still is a way of life for our family. It has allowed me to cut expenses so that we have gotten by on my husband's income and still provided piano lessons for our kids. There is definitely power and security in taking care of yourself.
