About me

Location Greenwood, Nova Scotia, Canada
Introduction I understand the role that rural tourism can play in a local economy. I'm from rural Nova Scotia, Canada, and have been monitoring rural tourism around the world for the past while. In 2008, along with a highly-motivated team, I held an event that was designed to help boost tourist interest and economic development. We called it "Ride The Lobster" - a 5-day, 800 km race that attracted 140 participants from 12 countries. It was a world first -- a race of long distance UNICYCLISTS; yes, unicyclists. Imagine an event that tours your area for a week at (almost) slow motion (up to 50km/hr or 30mph) while the world looks on, live, via Googlemaps. We averaged 27,000 website hits per day during that week. Do NOT overlook anything that sounds absurd or TOO niche. Nothing is too niche with global communications these days. I still get weekly requests to repeat the event (PS we did not lose money but it was a lot of work). Again, with the internet these days anything is possible. I will be posting rural tourism notes to my blog site http://www.theruraltourist.blogspot.com as part of my mission to exchange ideas and stories on rural tourism, experience and economy.
