| Introduction | I am nearing the end of my 50s (how the hell did that happen?) and am thinking ahead to the next phase of life when I retire in 3 + years which will coincide with the youngest of my 5 children graduating from high school and heading to college. My goal (after a 35 year professional career and 30 or so years of parenting) is to make the "final third" of my life a time of productivity, spiritual and personal growth, exploration and fun! I am interested in consuming less and contributing more, learning for the sheer joy of learning, living more mindfully and savoring the gift of time without a 40-50 hour a week commitment to outside employment and a family to raise. In soccer, "the final third" is the place where the most play-making, scoring and excitement resides, where skill is on display, where the game really happens -- and if I get really lucky I have about a third of my life left. Hence -- The Final Third! |
