| Introduction | For the past 19 years I have served the indigent community as a Public Defender Investigator. During that time, many good, bad and ugly cases have crossed my desk. As a member of a minority group in my community (are Hispanics still a minority in So Cal?) and in my chosen profession (where we are definitely a minority), I feel a sense of responsibility toward our clients. And, being a minority myself I realize that by the grace of God (and some shoddy police work when I was young) there go I. Now before you get all teary-eyed and try to hug me or before you lose your composure to curse me, I also spent 12 years in Federal law enforcement. In fact, twice in my life I have taken an oath to uphold the Constitution against 'enemies foreign and domestic' and twice in my life I have fulfilled that oath: from the steamy jungles of Viet Nam to the mean streets of L.A. So, in a way this is my third go-around in upholding the Constitution. Is the third time a charm? Ask me on a good day, not today. ‘Fiat Justitia Ruat Caelum.’ |
