IntroductionMost sermons are constructed from planks of prose, measured, cut and nailed together. The preacher as a good workman has no cause to be ashamed when he or she pronounces the Amen. The community of faith that rests in the shelter of these good sermons--biblically sound and well constructed--will find comfort and direction. But something more is wanted, and all who have once experienced that something more come to worship in the hope that this time a phrase will turn in an unexpected direction and the worshiper will follow the preacher out of that well-constructed shelter into the open where our hope can grow as big as the sky. Or the path we follow may lead us into a wild place with eerie sounds and threatening shadows and on to an adventure that we had never before dared to take. That's what's wanted, though most times when I preach I preach in prose, but sometimes I am a poet; this tells my story as a preacher and sometime poet.
