Clay is a group of hydrous aluminium phyllosilicate minerals, that are typically less than 2 microns in diameter and rich in silicon and aluminium oxides and hydroxides which include variable amounts of structural water, formed by the chemical weathering of silicate-bearing rocks by carbonic acid or by hydrothermal activity.
