| Introduction | A life-long practicing Missouri-Synod Lutheran; belligerently pro-Catholic; an idealist who greatly admired President Kennedy, but not a leftist. Embarrassed & angry at Ultra Leftists who’ve taken over Democratic Party, nationally and here in Maryland. The Democrats I admire are never anti-American; are never congenital liars; they do insist on fidelity to Constitutional Rights like free speech, a free press, due process and equal rights. Leftists loathe all such values. I see noble greatness in Mencken, Giorgione, each and every one of the great Apostles, Tacitus, John F. Kennedy, Pope John Paul, Martin Luther King, Jr., Wilberforce, St. Francis, Luther, Mandela, Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Lincoln, F. D. Roosevelt, Truman, Reagan, Churchill, Milton, Shakespeare. Devoted totally to Debora, Jennifer, Edward, Allison, my parents and, now, L'il John and L'il Cannon. Blindly devoted to my alma mater, the University of Maryland, Admire, greatly, the great Libraries. In awe of Cellists Feuermann, Klengel and Markevitch, Poets Tennyson, Pope, Gray, Baudelaire, Brooke and Thomas, and Writers (too many to list). Devoted to the Orioles, Ravens, intrepid Burnley, and my Terrapins. |

| Favorite movies | These classics: The Gladiator, It's a Wonderful Life, Inherit the Wind (the Spencer Tracy/Gene Kelly version), the Sound of Music, How Green Was My Valley, The Natural, The Graduate, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, Nativity Story, Friday Night Lights, Red Violin, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Dr. Zhivago, Saving Private Ryan, Amazing Grace, The Fly Boys, Son of God, the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Trilogies, Yanks, Shakespeare in Love, and, okay, okay, okay, I'll admit it, I really like the Harry Potter movies, every last one of them, really I do. When one nationally syndicated writer said "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkeban" was a perfect movie, and people laughed at him, I couldn't understand why. The three kids who grew up in those movies are all amazingly good, but the supporting cast is a who's who of English Acting: Gambon, Gleason (both Brendan and his son, Dominall), Smith, Bonham-Carter, Spall, Rickman, Coltrane, Fiennes, Griffiths, Isaacs, Oldman, Shaw, Thewlis, Thompson, Walters, Williams, Broadbent, Cleese, Davis, Harris, Hurt, Richardson, Staunton, Nighy, Margoyles, Hart, Jones, Pattinson, Hardy, and Wannamaker. |
| Favorite music | Classical to Rock and everything in between. Very fond of Brahms' Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, Gorecki's Third Symphony, Edgar Meyer's Version of Appalacian Spring for Solo Cello, all Six of Bach's Cello Suites and Klengel's Double Cello Concerto. I find myself getting lost in just about anything Phillip Glass composes. The contemporary cellists Wispelwey, Bailey, both Demengas, Kliegel, Harrel, Jeanrenaud, Keating, Sutter, Wendy Brown, Gastinel, Yo Yo Ma, Klaus-Dieter Brandt, and, though they are old and ill, Bengtsson and Starker. Any of the great Symphonies by Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, Gluck's Dance of the Blessed Spirits and Locatelli's Devil's Trill. Then there are the Rock Classics I continually listen to: Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull, Rebel Rebel by David Bowie, Love on the Wrong Side of Town by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Go Your Own Way, Dust, Seventeen, Talk to Me, Come a Little Bit Closer and Sarah by Fleetwood Mac. Everything Brandi Carlile does seems too good to be true. And this is just the beginning. I used to love Springsteen. But when he embraced and actively assisted the flawed John Kerry, and acted like fighting Al Qaeda was somehow morally wrong, he lost me. Either he never was as perceptive as I'd thought, or he is regularly convinced to buy the Brooklyn Bridge. It's one thing to honestly say you don't like George Bush (and really courageous if you do; ask Tom Wolf), but it's another to go out on the trail with somebody like Kerry and act like he's really a great candidate and person. I had all the LP's Springsteen released. Since the recording industry switched to CD, I only purchased one, and that was before he and Kerry signed their ludicrous pact of steel. |
| Favorite books | Mencken's Happy Days, Newspaper Days and Heathen Days, Tacitus' Histories, A History of Knowledge by Charles Van Doren, Fitzgerald's This Side of Paradise and The Great Gatsby, Hemmingway's The Sun Also Rises, the Illiad, the Odyssey, David McCullogh's Truman, Adams and 1776, Alonzo L. Hamby's Biography of Truman (Oxford University Press), the great novels by D. H. Lawrence and John Fowles, anything by Shakespeare or Montaigne, and Robert K. Massie's Biography of Peter the Great. I have also become a huge fan of Danielle Trussoni, not only for her gritty but beautiful memoir, but also for the first two thirds of her trilogy concerning Angels. Third volume due out at some point... |
