| Introduction | This course explores 19th century British fiction and poetry and important historic developments that contributed to shaping these literary works. In addition to discussion of two novels, Brontë's Jane Eyre and Hardy's The Return of the Native, particular attention will be given to Romantic and Victorian perspectives through consideration of selected poems by Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Bryon, Shelley, Keats, Tennyson, Browning, Christina Rosetti, Hopkins, Housmann and Arnold. A ten-day England Study Tour, which is part of the course, includes several days in London and visits to Grasmere, where Wordsworth wrote; Haworth, home of the Brontë sisters; and Dorset, the setting of Hardy's novels. |
