Introduction I have lived in Sissinghurst, in Kent, for much of my life, and from around the age of five I have been interested in birds and nature generally, I used to spend a lot of my time searching a small wood with my Dad on the outskirts of the village where we lived. It wasn't until around 1997 soon after I moved into the village that I started making more frequent visits to the local National Trust site. There is a fairly good range of habitats including Ancient Woodland, some small lakes, open arable land, pasture, meadow, a stream and soon to be maybe a couple of orchards, the hedgerows are also important with more being planted recently. If there aren't many birds around it's still a great place to walk, and holds good numbers of dragonflies, butterflies and moths, which I hope to include in some of the postings here. A few years ago I asked Stephen Message, a friend and local wildlife artist, I have been birding with since around the age of 11 or 12, if he would help me record the birds on the estate, as I thought it had more to offer than I was finding. It has paid dividends with several new species for the site being found by Stephen in recent years.
