Introduction Exploring the political, environmental and cultural implications of attempts to preserve an iconic – even sacred to many – landscape and habitat.
Interests Bill Keshlear posts commentary and analysis here whenever his muse demands it. He is a Salt Lake City-based journalist with several decades of newspaper experience under his belt: most prominently at the Missoulian in Montana, Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram, San Diego Union-Tribune and The Salt Lake Tribune. He is preparing a book proposal on creation of Bears Ears National Monument. His perspective on important stuff was developed, mostly, as a journalism, humanities and sociology student at the University of Montana a long time ago. His focus was Native American culture and heritage. GO GRIZ! He also was managing editor for a Salt Lake City-based adventure travel company that organized treks to Tibet, northern India and Nepal. Guided treks went to Everest Base Camp, which now more closely resembles a garbage dump than the jumping-off point for high-altitude mountaineering, and Lhasa, formerly home of Buddhist lamas transported on magic carpets. It’s been “liberated” of its mythical identity by the Chinese government and transformed into a Disneyesque tourist trap. He suggests reading Pico Iyer's "Video Night in Kathmandu: And Other Reports from the Not-So-Far East." He also spent some time as communications director for the Utah Democratic Party.
