| Introduction | Born in Hamburg, Germany, worked all my life, raised two children by myself, and recently got laid-off from my job. Tried to become independent graphic designer without much success, but loved it even when people didn't pay. Wish I could continue this struggle, but it is more important to eat. Looking for a part time job that would suit me. Ha! Will always continue doing graphic design. I was a reader all my life, always, wherever I was. One book after the other was consumed, and this started when I was a kid. In the beginning there were not many books available, but somehow my parents did find the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales and Andersen Fairy Tales. Both with nice old fashioned pictures and one of these old fashioned fonts — enjoyed over and over. Somehow also I came across the NIBELUNGEN SAGA, wow, what a read (in lack of other books in the house). But then I came across Gone With the Wind (in German) and loved it, yes, and so on and so on, more and more. Books are just the perfect thing to immerse in when you want to run away from problems, when you cannot sleep, when you are just plainly anti-social + enjoy more the use of language. |
| Interests | Hiking, traveling, laughing, museums, art, classical music, jazz music, operas, yoga, pilates, foreign movies, swimming and more hiking, and of course reading. Was always curious about other countries, other people's habits and cultures, or just why things happen to some people. And why some people just march on and smile and don't look beat while others constantly complain. Long ago I had decided to stay with the non-complainers. I thought that many of these questions are answered in books. Maybe ten years ago, I started reading and studying German history (and particularly the Nazi times) and I can honestly not say how many books I have read on this subject, 100, 200. It surprises me how many new books are still coming out about WW II covering the period before and after. Quite confusing. Anyway, this is a time when i will write down what goes through my hand (mind) reading-wise. |
| Favorite movies | Mainly foreign movies and I strongly dislike Hollywood money makers. Every time the Oscars come around I am disappointed, either I don't know any of the listed ones, or the movies I really liked are not even mentioned. And this from a person that goes to the movies a lot! |
| Favorite books | There was a time when I owned very many books but moving from my old house into an apartment I realized that not everything could move with me. Difficult to get rid of books, nobody wanted them! Now I just get my books from the library + return them. Bingo. And still my book shelves at home are packed heavily since there are also many books given to me frequently. But I shelve only what I really loved. And that's a lot! I read the NY Times Book Review, Granta, The New Yorker, and the New York Review of Books and there is always new stimulation to be found. It's endless and I simply like it this way. Unfortunately one also forgets a lot of things (my son calls me "old woman") and so I started to make comments to myself on the books once I was finished reading. Stefan mentioned a blog, not a bad idea, and from now on I will just quickly write a short review. Perfect for me. |
