| Introduction | Brief background…. During high school I spent two summers at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, first as a volunteer and then as an intern. My first week in the museum was rocky-- I was scared of bugs, and I had been assigned to a volunteer placement in the O. Orkin Insect Zoo. But it was the Smithsonian, so I wasn’t about to complain. In I went, in my pink sundress and cardigan, ready to start my first day, with no idea of what to expect. Within an hour I had held a vinegaroon, a Madagascar hissing cockroach, and a lubber grasshopper. The rest is history. I fell in love with the museum, the insects, and the people who work behind the scenes. My goal in life is to eventually be hired by the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, and stay there forever! Now, with two years of a Dickinson education under my belt, I am thrilled to be back for another summer, with new projects and new people. I am excited to discover what this summer may teach me about my beloved museum, and to get one step closer to my goal. |
