| Introduction | Once upon a time, I was a quite competent trail and ultra runner: 15 100-mile finishes with six top three finishes; some local and regional, small field, 50K and 50 mile wins. The crowning jewels were my Badwater 135 finish (34:58 | 2015) and a gutsy Western States finish (2016) exactly one month after my mother died. Then I had a string of poor performances and DNF's because I tried to process my mother's death on the trail. Then COVID. Then a wretched case of shingles that took more than six months to fully recover from. So what now? Finding out what's still in there by getting back to work, and embracing all that's yet to come on the trail. |
