About me

Occupation Children's author
Introduction Born in Austria, I lived half my childhood in Germany - this could explain my passion for fairy tales and legends. Oh, and apple strudel. After reading English at university I worked in publishing for a while until the arrival of 4 children (well, not all at once) proved too much of a distraction. On the other hand, they provided the perfect excuse (did I need one?) to indulge my love of children's books, and while introducing them to old favourites and discovering new ones (like J K Rowling), I couldn't help wondering why no one had written children's versions of Dante's Inferno and Doctor Faustus. Well, someone had to do it, I guess... My first book, Ante's Inferno, came out with Troubador in 2012. The story of a 12 year-old girl who journeys through the classical underworld, complete with terrifying monsters and rivers of ice and fire, all the way to the heart of hell, it won the Children's People's Book Prize and a Silver Wishing Shelf Award. My latest book is The Tragickall History of Henry Fowst, a tale of a boy who makes a pact with a demon.
