| Introduction | I am 202 years old. I live in an Art Nouveau townhouse near Gare du Midi. I have an iBook and an Eames chair. I own an original Kandinsky painting and a first edition Alice in Wonderland. I have lived and seen it all. |
| Interests | Poetry, Peace and Prose, Politics, Painting and Pastels, Parchment, Postcards and Plums. |
| Favorite movies | Le mort qui tue, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, The Singing Fool (ironically, also a silent film), Jenny, Bringing Up Baby, Philadelphia Story, King Kong, the Wizard of Oz, Gone With The Wind, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Dr. Zhivago, The Spy Who Loved Me, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Manon des sources, Les roseaux sauvage, Forrest Gump, Amelie, Les triplettes de Belleville, Lost in Translation, and most recently I Heart Huckabees and Finding Neverland |
| Favorite music | Verdi no longer sounds the same, especially alongside the monstrosity of modern opera. I miss Chopin and Mozart, Pacelbel and Beethoven, not to mention dear Mahler. Today I love my old Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney records. They are the songs of my soul. Sometimes I remember Elvis and the beaches. Sometimes the Beatles and the marches. I don't like much of what is produced today. It doesn't have the old magic. |
| Favorite books | Les liasons dangereuses, Balzac and les penseurs francais, Pride and Prejudice, Huckleberry Finn, Immortalite, Kundera, Kafka and Milosz, oh, a million books by authors neither living nor remembered, and just as many by those remembered. These new books, 1984, Slaughterhouse 5, The DaVinci Code, Sunne in Splendor, Oryx and Crake would have been blasphemy in some other day, but today I find them a beautiful testimony to how far I've come. |
The first time you had your shoes taken off - how surprised were you to see that you still had toes?
Very surprised.
