| Introduction | There are several Kates, so I'll break them into the main bits. There's Kate the citizen. I live with David and our five pixies. I spent my childhood in the bush, adolescence in Canberra, and puberty on building sites as a labourer and unionist, both as delegate and a full-time union organiser with the Building Workers Industrial Union (now the CFMEU). In 1993, I was elected President of the ACT Trades and Labour Council, the first woman to hold the position. I like sport. I row and I dive and would like to base jump except I get giddy on the front step. I'm patron of the Canberra Rowing Club and several other sports and charity organisations. There's Kate the politician. I was elected as the Labor Senator for the Australian Capital Territory in 1996, aged 28. I'm the Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation, Health Promotion, and Local Government, and a member of several parliamentary committees, including Deputy Chair of the Senate Committee on Environment, Communications, Information Technology, Sport and the Arts. As you will have probably noted, I have a specific interest in information, and information and communications technology. |
