Introduction	The title is a reference to advice I received years ago from a classmate about how best to approach the Bible, "with sharp eyes and a gentle heart." I'm a first-year master's student in Hebrew Bible at a Divinity School, a 20-something lesbian Jewish feminist, doing my best to follow his advice. I love footnotes, cookies, words and wordplay, and think that I'm pretty much the luckiest woman alive.

Strangely, because I saw someone do it once and then practiced for several years. This is the same reason I can catch baseball barehanded a la Geena Davis in "A League of their Own"
