IntroductionPeople ask me why I transitioned from the bench to the mediation table. As a magistrate, I had the power to listen to both sides and enter a final, binding order. It is a vital part of our legal system, but it left me wishing for a different dynamic. In court, a judge's order rarely makes both parties happy; it is a decision imposed upon them by a third party, and someone almost always walks away feeling unheard or defeated. That is exactly why I love being a mediator. Instead of sitting above the dispute and entering an order, I get to roll up my sleeves and help people figure out the solution themselves. Mediation moves people away from being passive participants and puts them in the driver’s seat of their own lives. There is nothing quite like the shift that happens when two parties realize they have the power to create their own outcome. I love seeing the genuine satisfaction on their faces when they agree to a solution they came up with together—one that fits their family, their finances, and their children's futures. At the end of the day, I feel better knowing that I didn't just decide a case for them; I helped them find the bridge to their own brighter future.
