Introduction | Thanks for stopping by! I am a freelance television writer working full time as executive in charge of two school age children. I am a PTA volunteer, chauffeur, cook, party planner, boo-boo fixer, toy repair expert and whatever else all those stay-at-home mom calculators say I should be paid a couple hundred thousand dollars a year for. |
Interests | If I had laundry that came to life and folded itself and a chorus of little bluebirds and small woodland creatures to help me clean my house, I would spend my free time in my garden, at the swap meet, doing crafts, reading, having coffee with friends, playing with my kids and watching great TV. |
Favorite Movies | I tend to like my entertainment light and easy because if I'm going to spend $12 and two hours of my time in a movie theater, the last thing I want to see is the bloody demise of some poor soul at the hands of a deranged serial killer. Nor do I want to spend my evening watching the sad decline of a marriage or sitting in the middle of a family crisis. This year so far, my favorite movie is "500 Days of Summer, " which says it all. I am a sucker for a good romance with a little bit of comedy and smattering of snappy dialogue, placing movies like" Juno" on the tippy top of my list, but not above "When Harry Met Sally, " which remains my all time favorite. When I watch movies at home, I drive my family crazy by figuring out what's going to happen next, so I like a movie that surprises me, the way "Slumdog Millionaire" did. Now, I would be remiss not to mention my first love, television. Watching a good TV show is often the highlight of my evening. My current faves are "Mad Men, " for it's swingy dingy 60's fabulous setting, "Glee, " for the singing, the love triangles, the wacky situations that are not too far from real life (and, of course, Emma Pillsbury's wardrobe) I watch Burn Notice/Royal Pains for their beachy, breezy settings, wacky characters and snappy dialogue. My DVR is filled with about a dozen other dramas, and I throw a little bit of reality in there from time to time. Hoarders is like a train wreck, I can't. stop. watching. I love my HGTV, especially when I'm folding laundry. I'm an American Idol fan and I think The Biggest Loser is one of the most brilliant concepts for a television show ever. |
Favorite Music | I am a fan of all types of music-my iPod has everything from Dean Martin to The Silversun Pickups. I love classical, country, 80's, Motown and soul and indie rock. Like a good movie soundtrack, the music that plays in the background of my life is diverse, a mix of old and new, and the perfect accompaniment to the action. At least I'd like to think that. |
Favorite Books | Hands down favorite book this year? Water For Elephants. Read it, you'll understand why. I'm currently working my way through the Sookie Stackhouse novels, and they've been fine company on a road trip and through a nasty summer cold. I just read Mary Karr's "Lit" on my new Kindle and that book blew me away. I am fan of a well-crafted memoir, I liked "Mennonite In A Black Dress" and Ruth Reichl's "Garlic and Sapphires" as well. If I'm going to pick up a book for a vacation read, I tend to lean towards the fun and fluffy so Chick Lit takes up a fair amount of space on my bookshelf. I also like food-related books, "Julie and Julia" was a great read and not just because the title contains both my real name and the name I'm known by. I like more thoughtful fiction as well, like "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" and "The Time Traveler's Wife, " as long as it's not too depressing. I'm addicted to magazines, collect old cookbooks and if given the opportunity, would read the newspaper from cover to cover every day. |
