| Introduction | I am a children’s nurse with over 20 years’ experience of working in the NHS. It is a job I love and which I am proud of. I feel privileged to be able to share the moments that define people’s lives and to be able to make a difference in those moments. In my working life, no two days are ever the same. There are highs and lows, joys and frustrations, tears and laughter. On finding out that I am a children’s nurse, many people ask me how I cope with all the sadness that must surely come with children being in hospital. I tell them honestly that there are many more times that I laugh with patients than cry with them. In addition to my role as a Paediatric Advanced Clinical Practitioner in a busy Children’s A&E, I am proud to be a facilitator and mentor for Schwartz Rounds. I am passionate about the human side of healthcare and the need to care for staff as well as patients. I am a member of the UK Emergency Medical team with whom I deployed to Bangladesh in response to the diphtheria outbreak. This, together with some time in Malawi, has whetted my appetite for humanitarian healthcare. |
