Introduction In my early twenties, I had two lives. In the moments when I wasn't driving, sitting, eating, reading, gambling, or sleeping in a trailer-hauling, 16- passenger Ford van careening at 80mph across the North American continent, I was sitting in a late 70's decor, Bartelby the Scribner-esque law office in East Orange, New Jersey working for my father. Through my many years of work spent at his consumer bankruptcy firm, I gradually became familiar with the extremely sexy issues of debt and predatory lending. In all seriousness though I learned to see through one of the most malicious and false rumors circulated by the vile and ever- popular Hannity/ Limbaugh/ Savage/ right wing talk circuit about debtors and clients of bankruptcy: that they are lazy slackers, looking for ways to buck the system and avoid responsibility for the debt they had accumulated. What I learned in between dozens of mildly debaucherous coast to coast runs was that "more than 90% of the people who file for bankruptcy do so after a job loss, death, or medical emergency hampers their ability to stay current on all their expenses." (Thanks Professor Warren) This really is a big deal.
