| Introduction | pbm (BS/MS-TAMU, Ph.D.-Univ. FL) was raised w/ 5 younger siblings (& worked w/ migrant labor crews) during the drought of the 50s on a very small diversified south TX (hog) farm. While in FL during the “Energy Crisis of the 70s”, Martin researched population dynamics of natural enemies of key lepidopteran pests in a “model north Florida ecosystem” (involving vegetable crops & wild hosts, & studies of Trichogramma and lacewings). Martin was influenced by ecologists like E.J. Dyksterhuis (TAMU), Archie Carr & H.T. Odum (Univ. FL) & David Pimentel (Cornell). Moreover, a considerable amount of applied ecological knowledge was developed in late night sessions w/ Miguel Altieri (UC Berkeley) & during years as a pasture entomologist in Georgia and Brazil, as sustainable agriculture coordinator w/ Jim Hightower’s TDA, and as teacher of biology/ecology at St. Philip’s College. He currently is involved w/ various organizations and efforts toward developing and promoting positively ethical applied community ecology, and works w/ his children and grandchildren on a small “family farm” near Stockdale, TX. |
