Introduction Matthew Rye is a writer, editor and critic. He has written numerous programme and CD booklet notes, was a reviewer for the Daily Telegraph for 13 years and BBC Music Magazine for over 15 (including 10 on the staff), and is former reviews editor of The Strad, for which he continues to write. He also writes for The Wagner Journal and Bachtrack.com and has contributed to the Independent, Sunday Times, Musical Times, Opera and Opera Now and other publications. His books include chapters in The Rough Guide to Classical Music on CD (1994) and The Blackwell History of Music in Britain (1995) and he was general editor of 1001 Classical Recordings You Must Hear Before You Die (Cassell Illustrated, 2007). He is the author of a series of eBooks, Masterpieces of Music (Erudition; www.eruditions.co.uk/), with titles on Bach's Mass in B minor, Beethoven's 'Eroica' Symphony and Brahms's First Piano Concerto.
